Richard Dean Anderson visited Melbourne on the Sunday, so Monday the next day was declared a public holiday in Melbourne to celebrate the occasion.
The city was decorated with banners and flags that said "MOOMBA", which stands for MacGyver O'Neill Official Melbourne Big Appreciation. It may have been former Melbourne Mayor John So who came up with that. On the Monday, a parade through the city and many other events were held to acknowledge and thank Richard Dean Anderson.
To thank Richard Dean Anderson and to remind Australians of his visit and his accomplishments, a public holiday coinciding with the celebration of MOOMBA will now be an annual event in Melbourne.
